Preventive law

β€œThe supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.”  Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

Jim utilizes a preventive law philosophy, employing both legal and practical approaches to anticipate and avoid unwanted legal outcomes. His goal is to reduce unbudgeted legal expenses for his municipal clients and assist them to mitigate their legal risks, thereby allowing local officials to concentrate on the important tasks they were elected and appointed to perform.

Jim views litigation as a narrow subset and specialty within the larger practice of law - an adversarial battle held in the context of the legal system.  The outcome of litigation is rarely certain, the costs can be very high, and the stress and distraction of litigation can be a significant obstacle to accomplishing more important community goals.  Because his focus is on preventive law and mitigation of legal risk, Jim believes firmly in the use of mediation and other alternative dispute resolution techniques.
